Last month, FERC unanimously approved Order 841, a landmark rule directing regional market operators to allow energy storage resources to compete in wholesale markets. The Brattle Group estimates that implementation of Order 841 could unlock 7,000 MW of economic energy storage as costs continue to decline. While Order 841 is a key step in increasing the flexibility of electric system - thus representing a potential opportunity for the energy storage industry - the rule gives significant latitude to regional market operators to determine just how they will comply.

Following ESA’s initial webinar on March 28th titled Kicking the Tires on Order 841: Diving into Details, Opportunities, and Challenges, we are pleased to provide an in-person, members-only strategy session at ESA’s Annual Conference where we will focus on developing recommendations for engaging with RTOs/ISOs as they craft compliance filings to maximize opportunities for storage. Our strategy session will assess where RTOs/ISOs are not yet in compliance, outline the general stakeholder process and timeline, anticipate key areas of potential conflict, and discuss what ESA will recommend to RTOs/ISOs in the various places where there is latitude. We will also review how motions for rehearing on Order 841 and the potential for litigation may affect implementation.

Remember, this strategy session is only available to members on-site at ESA’s Annual Conference in Boston, MA, on April 18 – register today; space is limited!
