Susan Kennedy

Founder & CEO
Advanced Microgrid Solutions

Prior to launching her own energy storage company, Advanced Microgrid Solutions, Susan served for two decades at the highest levels of state and federal government – as Communications Director for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, later Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Gray Davis, and most recently as Chief of Staff to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. From 2003 to 2006 she served on California’s Public Utilities Commission, regulating the state’s investor-owned electric utilities, telecommunications providers, and private water companies.

Across her numerous government roles, Susan was at the center of many of California’s groundbreaking environmental policies, including the carbon reduction mandate and cap-and-trade program under AB 32, the Low-Carbon Fuel Standard, auto emission standards, and the Golden State’s Renewable Portfolio Standard. Furthermore, she coordinated statewide emergency demand response efforts during the energy crisis of 2000-2001 and later on as a member of the California Public Utilities Commision (CPUC), she authored what was then the largest energy efficiency program in utility history.

Susan’s own company, Advanced Microgrid Solutions, is on the leading edge of a transformation of the electric grid. Using advanced energy storage systems, AMS is developing the first array of Hybrid Electric Buildings® in the world, turning portfolios of commercial and industrial buildings into virtual power plants for Southern California Edison. In 2014, AMS won the first major contract in the world to use these advanced energy storage technologies on a large scale for replacing capacity from the now-retired San Onofre nuclear facility. AMS is consistently listed as one of the top cleantech companies to watch in the US.

Susan holds a B.A. in Management from Saint Mary’s College of California.
